Frequently Asked Questions

General

GoMusic is a digital collectibles marketplace built ‘by musicians for musicians’. We are revolutionizing the music industry by providing musicians with a new fairer revenue stream whilst supporting their chosen charity and providing their fans with limited edition digital collectibles, all recorded as NFTs authenticated on the Hedera Network.

The Hedera Network is a layer 1 blockchain/decentralized ledger technology (DLT). We believe Hedera is the best DLT for minting, buying and trading digital collectibles given its incredibly fast transaction speed and low transaction costs, making lower value NFTs economically viable. Additionally, Hedera is governed by a council of the largest global companies such as LG, IBM, Google and Boeing ensuring that it is secure, reliable, well-managed and enterprise-grade. You can find more information about the Hedera Network on the Hedera website.

GoMusic is built on the Hedera Network which is particularly attractive for the music industry given it is carbon neutral and regarded as the world’s greenest blockchain. In its research, University College London (UCL) found that Hedera had the lowest overall energy consumption of all the leading blockchains; their report can be found here.

A mint is a limited edition digital collectible coupled to a particular musician and their releases, recorded on the Hedera Network as a non-fungible token (NFT). A mint could be an exclusive backstage photo, album cover artwork, original signed lyric sheet, audio or video clips, remixes, instrumental stems or even early access to a new release - the possibilities are endless. We work with each musician to curate mints that will provide a greater emotional connection to their superfans.

Not unless this is agreed with the rightsholder and specified within the mint description. Most mints are simply limited edition digital collectibles for fans to collect and enjoy and do not include any copyright or other intellectual property rights as these are retained by the relevant rightsholders.

Mints are offered in different ‘rarity tiers’ depending on their exclusivity and inherent value. On GoMusic, these tiers will be Diamond (1-of-1), Gold (10 editions), Silver (100 editions) and Green (1,000 editions). Initially, during GoMusic’s beta phase, all mints will be offered in the Silver rarity tier.

The token metadata of each mint is stored as a non-fungible token (NFT) on the Hedera Network as a proof of ownership and can be authenticated and tracked at all times. The underlying asset (such as an image, artwork or music download) is permanently stored on the interplanetary file system (IPFS), which is a distributed file system ensuring that each asset can be accessed and downloaded by its owner at any time. See https://ipfs.tech for more information. If there are assets that are not intended to be publicly available on IPFS, these will be ‘token-gated’ so that only the owner of the associated NFT will be able to download the assets from the GoMusic server (proving ownership through a Hedera wallet).

Each musician nominates a charity and a dedicated Hedera account will be opened for that charity which will receive 10% of the gross sales revenue of all the musician’s mints on the primary sale, and 5% of the gross sales revenue on each future resale. The chosen charity will be promoted on the musician’s profile page and all their mints will have the charitable donation built into the token metadata. As all transactions are permanently recorded on the Hedera Network, anyone can audit payments and wallets at any time.

No. As worldwide crypto adoption is still at only 4.2%, we do not want to potentially alienate the vast majority of music lovers who may want to access our platform by requiring them first to buy our token. We want to remove as much friction as possible and to democratise access to music NFTs. Requiring users to buy a platform-specific token would run counter to those goals, and there are also regulatory concerns. That said, once GoMusic has built a strong market presence and the regulatory landscape is clearer, we may consider issuing a token where this will enhance the experience for users.

Musicians

Any musician, band or their manager, agent or other representatives can register with GoMusic. We welcome artists of all backgrounds to sign up regardless of genre or how many followers the musician has.

To get started, you just need to register your interest here. To ease the process, please provide the official email account for you, your band or your management company etc.

1) Once we have authenticated you as the rightsholder (such as a musician) or the authorised representative of the rightsholder (such as a manager), you will need to e-sign and submit our Music Rightsholder Contract here.2) You will need to send us your profile, the details of the charity you wish to support and two quality images (jpeg, svg, png): (i) your profile pic (PFP) and (ii) a landscape image, so that we can create your profile page.3) We will then work with you to curate your mints. See: ‘What is a mint?’4) You will provide all assets and descriptions via a Google Drive link.5) We will create the mints for your preview and our team will work with you, making iterations on the GoMusic testnet.6) On the agreed release date, the mints will be made live on the GoMusic marketplace and musicians will share links on social media for their fans to purchase their mints.

Below are some of the most popular reasons we have heard from musicians:1) To earn a fairer income from music - music artists overwhelmingly feel underpaid and we believe the current pay-per-stream model isn’t working. The value of music is more than the stream and you may have fans who love what you do and would love to own a limited edition collectible, especially if it provides more insight or expression about you as an artist or about a song they love.To grow deeper connections to your audience2) GoMusic provides a medium for you to carefully curate a range of limited edition collectibles around your release and allow you to express more about your music. You may feel your release is expressed better in the context of certain visuals or other audio excerpts that inspired you at the time and GoMusic lets you curate a myriad of files that provide more insight into how you were thinking or feeling about your release. The possibilities are limitless!3) To promote your release, a gig, or a cause you care for - many artists expressed an interest in releasing the mint before or after the release of the single or album to help promote it or to remind listeners to listen to their record.4) To retain an element of exclusivity around your mints. As all assets are minted as ‘non-fungible tokens’ (NFTs) and are therefore proveably authentic, limited and cannot be altered.

GoMusic sets up a Hedera account for each musician, their representative or rightsholder as part of the onboarding process. Transaction values are received into that Hedera account instantaneously, with no processing fees.

Yes. Mints are hard-coded on the Hedera Network with built-in royalties to be paid upon each resale. This means that you as the original rightsholder will usually receive a 20% royalty on the gross sales value of any future sales and your chosen charity will also receive an additional 5%. So as you become more and more popular and your fan-base grows, your early mints may become more valuable, meaning you, your charity and the original buyer benefit.

GoMusic leverages the native functionality of the Hedera Network, which allows split payments to be made to multiple wallets. So you can allocate a share to different band members or other rights-owners.

Don’t worry - you are not committed at any stage. Having registered with GoMusic, you can still use other platforms, even other NFT platforms, without restriction, but of course not for the same mints or releases otherwise this would be unfair to your fans. Additionally, you are not locked-in; you can leave GoMusic at any time, and remove your mints from sale.

There is no cost to get started creating and selling mints on GoMusic. We cover all minting and transaction fees on the Hedera Network. GoMusic charges musicians a commission of 10% on the gross sales value of all mints sold. This commission is hard-coded into the token metadata and is collected automatically as part of the sales transaction. GoMusic also charges a lower commission of 5% on the gross sales value of any future resales.

Fans

No, as a fan you do not need to sign-up. You could just browse, connect your Blade Wallet (see below) and buy a mint as a guest without signing-up or logging in to GoMusic. However, if you wish to sign-up, you will be the first to hear GoMusic news, such as relating to new musicians being added to the site, or new mints being dropped, as well as other benefits.

You will need a Blade Wallet (www.bladewallet.io) with some HBARs (the native cryptocurrency of the Hedera Network) and then connect it to GoMusic. Once you’ve selected the mint you wish to purchase and clicked ‘Buy’, you will be prompted to sign a transaction and make payment, which may involve some Blade transaction fees to utilise the Hedera Network. Once you’ve signed, the relevant amount of HBARs will be deducted and the mint will appear within your Blade Wallet in a few seconds.

You can download Blade Wallet from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Chrome Web Store. For more information, visit www.bladewallet.io. Please ensure that you follow all the instructions and keep a record of your Password and Secret Recovery Phrase in a safe place. This will be critical for restoring your account.

Yes, you can buy GoMusic mints with debit or credit cards by downloading the Blade Wallet app and using their fiat payment solution via MoonPay. The first time you use MoonPay, you will need to complete a KYC process to confirm your identity. You can then use your Visa or Mastercard to buy the mint, for which MoonPay will charge a processing fee. Alternatively, you can purchase HBARs within your Blade Wallet through MoonPay and then transact using HBARs.

GoMusic does not charge any fees to fans to purchase mints. The only fees that may be incurred by fans are within your Blade Wallet to process transactions on the Hedera Network. GoMusic charges a commission to musicians and rights-holders - usually 10% on primary sales and 5% on future resales.

GoMusic does not currently support secondary sales. However, a secondary marketplace is on our roadmap and we will inform registered customers by email and through social media once this functionality is enabled. In the meantime, you could trade the mints via third party secondary marketplaces.

Yes. Mints are hard-coded on the Hedera Network with built-in royalties and commissions to be paid upon each future resale. This will usually be 20% royalty to the original creator, 5% to their chosen charity and 5% commission to GoMusic, meaning that you as the mint owner would receive 70% of the gross sales value.

Sorry it is not possible to reverse a transaction as all sales are made with finality on the Hedera Network, and mints cannot be returned for a refund. Your only option would be to try to trade the mint with another fan on a secondary marketplace.
